Reflections: The Gift of the Magi

gift of magi book coverThere is a short story that I absolutely love. It’s called The Gift of the Magi written by O. Henry.

It is a touching story of a couple wanted who wanted so desperately to get each other a very special gift for Christmas that they each sold the possessions they were most proud of in order to do so.

Imagine the look on both of their faces as they returned home to exchange gifts.

She, Della, cut off and sold her extremely long hair in order to purchase a gold watch chain to match Jim’s watch (which was a family heirloom).

He, Jim, sold his gold pocket watch in order to purchase beautiful, jeweled combs for Della’s hair (which was now gone.)

As quoted from the story:

Della: “Maybe the hairs of my head could be counted, but no one could ever count my love for you.”

Jim: “Nothing like a haircut could make me love you any less.”

I love this story because it reminded me of a few things to consider when searching for the “perfect gift” during this Christmas season.

  1. What Does It Mean To Give From the Heart?
  2. What Does It Mean To Sacrifice?
  3. What Does It Mean To Truly Love Unselfishly & Unconditionally?

May all of you who read this have a Blessed Christmas & New Year – reflecting on what it means to give (and receive) sincerely from the heart, appreciate the sacrifice that was made to give the gift, and receive love that is both unselfish and unconditional.

Merry Christmas,

Katrina
